Birdsville Qld 4482
(Pop 120)
Birdsville is an isolated but famous
Outback settlement 1 688 km west of Brisbane. It
sits at the edge of the
Simpson Desert and at the northern end of the
notorious
Birdsville Track. Settlement began in 1870s
with the township was originally called Diamantina to
honour the Qld Governor’s wife. The name was changed
to reflect the enormous numbers of birds in the area
including seagulls. A major cattle route was
established in 1880s and became known as the
Birdsville Track. Cattle remain one of the economy’s
mainstays today together with tourism. Birdsville Cup
Racing Carnival (Sept) began in 1882 and is hugely
popular.
